ROULETTE RULES

WHAT ACTUALLY IS ROULETTE?

The majority of us have heard of the well-known casino game, Roulette. Roulette was invented in France during the 1800s, and has ever since been one of the most liked casino games that in the world. Roulette is still played in every part of the world and is certainly one of the more popular games in both online and offline casinos. However, Roulette is considered to be one of the hardest games to beat, since it is completely based on luck and there are actually no gambling systems that would imply consequent wins. My friend, Albert Einstein, once said: “You can’t beat a roulette table, unless you steal from it”. Alright, Einstein may not have been my friend and he might not have said this. However, we definitely do not recommend stealing from a Roulette table, unless you want to spend years in prison. Ah, fuck it. Do whatever you want, but you didn’t get any ideas from our blog.

(Facts checked: Albert Einstein did actually say what I mentioned above. Unfortunately though, he was not my friend.)

HOW IS ROULETTE PLAYED?

We here at Casinoblogg.nu are already experts at everything, but we would still like to explain how Roulette is played. If you happen to consider yourself a Roulette expert (welcome to the team btw), you can skip this section. However, if you are just starting out or have only played a couple rounds of Roulette, then we definitely recommend that you read this section to the end. This section is really important since it covers every aspect of playing Roulette. Just kidding, we recommend you that read it because it written by us. YEAH, THAT’S WHY.

Alright, jokes aside. Roulette includes a bowl with a rotating wheel, and a small ball. There are 37 small sections in the wheel, all numbered from 0 to 36 in alternately black and red. The only exception is the zero, which is green. Roulette, like every other casino game out there, starts with the players placing their wagers. Since all wagers are placed on the same table, there is a probability of two or more players placing the same wager. This is why every player has to buy their own chips. The chips have different colors, which makes it easy for both the croupier and the players to distiungish their own chips. The chips can only be bought and cashed at the Roulette table, so always remember to cash your winnings before leaving the table.

After each player have their chips available at hand, the game starts with the players placing their wagers. Players can wager any amount of chips by placing them on any possible bets, e.g. one or multiple numbers. Every wager you place, is then divided into inside and outside bets. The difference between inside and outside bets lies in the probability of winning and in the amount one can possibly win. By placing an inside bet, the probability of you actually winning is low. However, if you happen to win by placing an inside bet, the amount you’ll win will be pretty generous. By placing an outside bet, the probability of you winning is a whole lot higher, but the amount you win is also smaller.

An example of an inside bet would be placing a wager on one number, for example 17.

An example of an outside bet would be placing a wager on an uneven number.
Below, you can find a table that describes the different bets and their odds:

Roulette Rules, Odds and Payouts

Let’s say that you wager 30£ on the number 17. If the ball actually does stop at 17, your win will be 35 times the amount of your wager. This equals to 35 x 30£ = 1050£. This wager is an example of an inside bet.

Let’s turn this around, and say that you now wager on an even number. The chances of you winning are now close to 50%, and if you happen to win, your win is double the amount you wagered. This means that if you bet 50£ on the ball stopping at an even number and it actually does, you’ll be walking home with 100£ in your pocket. This wager is an example of an outside bet.

Just like every professional gambler out there, we here at Casinoblogg.nu also know that outside bets are better, since outside bets are simply statistically smarter. However, we do not recommend pulling off an “Ashley Revell”. Ashley decided to sell everything he owned and go to Vegas to wager everything on one Roulette spin. He apparently knew what he was doing, when he wagered everything on red, and won 135 300$. Such a legend. You can read more about this incredible story here.

You can see all the numbers and possible wagers on the big green cloth, also called the wagering area. After the players have placed their wagers, the croupier rolls the ball in the opposite direction of the spinning wheel. While the wheel is still spinning, players are allowed to change, withdraw or place new wagers. When the ball is starting to slow down, the croupier will clearly inform the table that no more bets are allowed. After this, all wagers on the table are final and one can no longer change, withdraw or place new wagers.

When the ball has stopped at one of the numbers, the croupier places a dolly (small glass object) on the winning number. The croupier then continues by paying the players their winnings and collecting all of the losing bets. While the croupier is paying winnings or collecting loosing bets, no one is allowed to touch the chips on the tables or place new wagers. When the croupier is done, he will clearly signal that new wagers are allowed.

EUROPEAN ROULETTE RULES

Roulette rules have been around since day one. However, they do vary depending on where you find yourself in the world, and the rules also change with time. Understanding the rules of Roulette shouldn’t be a problem, since they are very simple. However, you do need to keep in mind which type of roulette you’re playing, and where you are located.

Roulette rules have been there since the beginning, mainly because they need to. There has always been cheaters and people who try to manipulate the Roulette table in different ways. There are also a whole lot of people who have successfully found ways to illegally beat the system. Francis Farruggia, one of the most famous people to ever make millions by manipulating the roulette table, was able to go 20 years before getting caught. You can read more about Francis smart tricks here.

Abiding to Roulette rules isn’t that hard, especially if you are gaming at an online casino. At online casinos, you play Roulette at your own table. There is no croupier, no other players and no colourful chips. When you play Roulette at an online casino, many of the rules we have mentioned do not apply. However, we recommend controlling which Roulette rules apply, before wagering real money.

If you are playing at a land-based casino, it’s important that you as a player know the etiquette and roulette rules of the casino you are playing at.

There are also additional Roulette rules that apply in some casinos, e.g. the “En Prison” rule and the “La Partage” rule.

THE “EN PRISON ” RULE

This Roulette rule only applies to even-money bets. The rule implies that a player has two choices when the ball stops at zero.

  • Receive half the amount of the placed wager, and loose the other half.
  • Leave the wager (“En Prison” = in prison “) until the next round for an “all or nothing” wager. If the ball once again stops at zero or at a number that doesn’t match your placed wager, you loose the whole amount. However, if the spin matches your wager, you get all of your money back.

THE “LA PARTAGE” RULE

The “La Partage” rule is very much alike the “En Prison” rule. However, this Roulette rule implies that the player doesn’t have a choice when the ball stops at zero, and simply looses half of the placed wager.

(KEEP IN MIND THAT THESE ROULETTE RULES DO NOT APPLY EVERYWHERE. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CONTROL WHICH RULES APPLY BEFORE WAGERING REAL MONEY AT THE ROULETTE TABLE)

MAXIMUM AND MINIMUM WAGERS

Both online and land-based casinos usually have a minimum and maximum wagering limit at the Roulette table. Info about the wagering limits can be found at the table.

NORTH AMERICAN ROULETTE RULES

In North America and the Caribbean, the Roulette wheel has an additional zero and all wagers are lost if the ball stops at zero. The result of this is noticeably poorer odds for the player and an increase in the Casino’s cut. This is probably why Roulette isn’t as popular in these regions as it is in the rest of the world. So if you get to choose between North American Roulette and European Roulette, always choose African Roulette. In African Roulette the odds are significantly better for you. There are less numbers and the chance of winning is a lot higher. Alright, we’re kidding. Don’t ask me if there actually is something called African Roulette, but we sure as hell recommend you stick to playing European Roulette.
